Gustavo A. Fortich

Gustavo Fortich

“I always appreciate being able to help someone in their native language.  Navigating the legal system is difficult enough for a native English speaker and doubly so for recent immigrants, who must deal not only with a different language, but a different culture as well.”

Gustavo Fortich has been practicing law for over 18 years. His extensive experience includes: wills, trusts, and estate planning, probate and guardianship administration, and residential real estate transactions.

Gustavo’s community outreach includes teaching in English and Spanish monthly workshops on the basics of Estate Planning, and lecturing on this same topic at organizations and businesses.   Even before attending law school, Gustavo was involved in the community.

As an undergraduate, Gustavo accomplished an internship with NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials) which brought him to attend the NALEO Annual Conference in Albuquerque, NM.  Gustavo and his group met with policymakers and elected officials.  During this internship program, he interned in the offices of Florida State Representative Luis E. Rojas in Hialeah.  The following summer Gustavo was selected to participate in the CHCI (Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute) Summer Legislative Internship Program.  He interned in Washington DC on Capitol Hill in the offices of Massachusetts Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II.  There, Gustavo addressed constituent requests and concerns, and was given a special project inquiring into the status of persons who had “disappeared” in several Latin American countries.  Exposure into the legislative process, through these programs greatly influenced Gustavo’s decision to enroll in law school at Florida State University and become an attorney.  While in law school, Gustavo participated in the clinical program of the Children’s Advocacy Clinic, representing juveniles in delinquency and dependency actions.

Gustavo is grateful to have grown up bilingual, as he feels that as an attorney, being fluent in both English and Spanish gives him the opportunity to serve and pursuit justice for even more people. He realizes that practicing law is more than just signing on the dotted line; it is about the people you serve, and the rights that are protected through the right advice and the correct execution of documents. He fondly remembers the year he volunteered assisting Migrant Farmworkers in the translation and completion of paperwork for matters of immigration, medical care, and government assistance programs, and providing them with general legal assistance in conjunction with qualified professionals.  “One of the most positive experiences I had was participating in the Migrant Farmworker Outreach Program in rural North Florida, where something as simple as explaining a letter or legal document meant a great deal to someone.”
